Description: Do you need financial support to participate in ScienceWriters2026 in person or virtually? You can apply for a grant to increase internet bandwidth, offset travel costs, buy a headset or other equipment, and/or help with caregiving costs (including, but not limited to, childcare and elder care). Awardees also will receive complimentary meeting registration. In exchange, awardees will be asked to submit a short write-up of a conference session, take event photos, or post to social media.
The grants will reimburse up to $1,200 in expenses for in-person attendees and up to $100 in expenses for virtual attendees. You may apply before you have made a final decision about in-person vs. virtual attendance. Applicants from all career stages are welcome, as are international applicants; those applying for travel assistance should already have permission to travel to the U.S. (e.g. an existing visa).
You do not need to be an NASW member to apply. Non-member awardees who are eligible for student or regular membership will receive a complimentary membership. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received one of these grants, applicants who have lost employment or had a significant financial hardship in the last year, and applicants who have participated in the Perlman mentoring program, especially those who received a Perlman award.

Description: Mentor training and travel fellowship to SciWri2026
Apply by July 31 to participate in the Science Writers Mentor Academy. You may also apply for a travel fellowship to ScienceWriters2026 as part of the program.
Mentoring is an essential part of career growth for both mentors and mentees. The Science Writers Mentor Academy provides evidence-based mentor training to help individuals acquire and improve skills in effective mentoring. Whether you’re a seasoned, novice or aspiring mentor, you will find this training worth your while. The program is supported by an Idea Grant from the National Association of Science Writers (NASW). The training is led by Czerne M. Reid, PhD, an Instructional Associate Professor at the University of Florida and Founder of the Science Writers Mentor Academy.
The Science Writers Mentor Academy consists of five 1-hr virtual sessions to be held Fridays at noon Eastern in August and September, followed by an in-person, 2-hr follow-up session at the ScienceWriters2026 meeting in Corvallis, Oregon in September.
Up to 10 travel fellowships of $500 each will be awarded to facilitate attendance at the in-person mentor training session and ScienceWriers2026. Virtual attendance at the Corvallis session can be facilitated on a case-by-case basis, as needed.
Participants are expected to attend all six sessions. Those who complete the program will earn a Master Science Writing Mentor Certificate and become part of a network of trained mentors. Space is limited to 25 participants, so apply now!
